CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

“Think,” Andrew commanded himself as he began to pace the casino floor. He found he tended to think better while in motion. Perhaps the very act of moving tricked his brain into believing he was already taking action.

Someone had grabbed Kat’s friend the other day. He should have been more careful. He should have been watching for something like this, expecting something like this. Yet he hadn’t. Heck, he hadn’t been thinking straight at all. And now she was gone. He had to find her, had to rescue her. But how?

Not watching where he was going, Andrew walked straight into a large black woman, bouncing off her and crashing down to the ground. He looked up at the woman, her double-XL figure straining the stitching on a black leather skirt that was at least two sizes too small.

“Oh, honey, are you okay?” The woman’s voice sang out, vibrant and amused. “Was that your fault or mine?”

He blinked repeatedly. The woman seemed familiar and it took him a minute to realize why. This was the woman he’d seen Kat talking with the night before.

“My fault,” he stammered.

She reached out with one of her meaty hands and grabbed his arm, jerking him up off the floor with ease. “Well Francine is just fine, but are you okay?”

“Francine?”

“Yeah, that’s me. But you can call me Franny if you want.”

“You’re friends with Kat, aren’t you?”

“Kat? Kat?” The woman said, tapping one of her neon-green painted nails against her lips. “Oh, that skinny girl. Yeah, I know her.”

“Have you seen her?” It was an absolutely ridiculous thing to ask, yet he couldn’t stop himself, part of him hoping that somehow this woman would know where Kat had been taken, as if it was all just an elaborate hoax being played on him.

“Haven’t seen her this morning. Last I saw her … wait, wait just a minute. Are you … yes you must be. You’re that guy she was gushing over last night, her little magic man, aren’t you?” Francine took a step back and looked him up and down. “Yes, yes, yes. She was right. You are a cutie-patootie. Sorry, sugar, but I ain’t seen her. She was a bit tipsy when she left me last night. Perhaps she’s still sleeping it off.”

He nodded, mumbling his thanks before moving on. Francine watched, saying something about his butt under her breath, though exactly what he couldn’t say, but she laughed as if it were the funniest comment she’d ever made. Then she moved on as well, yelling out that she needed a drink and announcing her impending arrival to the craps table.

“Magic man,” Parker said, and then stopped dead in his tracks. Magic! He’d been so worried about Kat that he hadn’t been thinking straight. Magic was the answer, of course. Sure he was better at certain types of spells than others, but he knew plenty of locator spells.

He dashed across the casino floor to the concierge desk, jumping in front of an elderly couple.
